  • Asking for a friend.

I don't have too much info.

Their dad yells at them every night saying "piece of sh" and everything. They've been doing it for at least 12 years almost every night. Their mom is nice, but the father won't say anything when she's home.

I told him to get a recording of their dad yelling.

Should they call CPS? What do they do?

    Hi there,

Thank you for writing to us here at National Runaway Safeline (NRS). We understand it takes great courage to reach out, and we appreciate you sharing a little bit about what’s going on. It seems there is a lot that this person is faced with right now with dad calling them hurtful names and you’re wanting to find a way to help them. It’s great that this person has support and concern from you especially since this time is quite difficult for them.

To answer your question, emotional abuse can be reported to CPS so that is an option. Unfortunately, it's hard to say how CPS would respond since it's harder to find emotional abuse dangerous enough to remove a youth from their home or provide services. To learn more about what reporting could look like you might reach out to the experts at Child Help 1-800-422-4453

If they haven't already, they might talk to their mom about how their dad is saying to them to see if she can intervene or give them permission to leave. Having a space to vent and explore options may often bring out a solution previously not thought of. We are here as support to help you and them through this challenging time. We can best help by phone or chat. If you would like to talk more in detail please call or chat soon.

Our contact information is 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929); www.1800runaway.org (click on the chat button).

We’re here to listen and to help and hope you or this youth can reach out soon.

    Take care,

    NRS
