  • I want to say Bye to my old life.

Hello, I am over the age of 18 and I am seriously thinking about just leaving (I am already starting to pack). I live with only my mother, and it was arranged by her lawyer that she became my legal representative to me because I am disabled. But I been thinking about moving out and my disabilities are minor mental things like a adhd, sleeping disorder, anxiety, all stuff I can cope with. For the past 3 years on and off I even talked about it vaguely she never really listens to me seriously though or has the patients to talk in depth. She had recently become a born again Christian, became more overbearing, defensive, and childish, and so our close relationship has become poisonous, we constantly fight. We fought this morning and it's the final straw, I want to leave as soon as possible. But there is alot for me to take into account and I don't know where to start. I may call my elder sister and plan things but I don't want to burden anyone anymore.

RE: I want to say Bye to my old life.

Thank you so much for reaching out to us for help. It sounds like you are dealing with a lot in your mother’s home. We are sorry to hear that your relationship has become toxic with your mom. Fighting all the time sounds very difficult and painful. Since you are over 18, you should be able to move out if you want. If you would like to change your legal status with your mom, you may think about speaking with a lawyer or attorney about your situation. We are not legal experts, but it sounds like you feel that you are able to handle your health conditions on your own so you should be able to talk to a lawyer about what your legal rights are. It sounds like your main concern is leaving home. That is a big step to take, and it is understandable to feel like you don’t know where to start. It sounds like you have a sister that you can reach out to for support, which is great. You can also reach out to us and we can help talk you through some options and help you come up with a plan for how to move out. We are here 24/7 to answer your call. We are looking forward to hearing from you soon, and wish you the best of luck.

Re: I want to say Bye to my old life.

So here is what's happening so far:
I have made arrangements with my sister to stay over for the coming week, so me and mom can have a break from each other at least, but I want to try to make up with mom so I don't go on bad terms. I mean it's mother's day this Sunday, and I am very happy that she has something that makes her happy and don't like adding stress since she has alot to worry about too..It just gets a bit much sometimes since she is so sensitive, it is hard to be around her when I have to be so careful what I say, I use to be able to talk to her about anything any now she gets set off by alot of things it makes me very anxious and its about time I start planning to live in my own space, but I don't want to break contact either.

I am cooled off but I am still determined to make things happen, I researched casually for a couple years with little to show for it, just anything I can find, I need to worry about what is important to know when on the street and on my own, makes me realize how vulnerable a girl like me will be and just all the things is overwhelming. For example, my self protection, people worry me I want to take self defence classes, I need job training too, and trying to find a state/area that will be a good place for someone who will be living off minimal wage(probably several jobs)is some of the many subjects I looked into and still looking. I made it a point to bookmark my internet sources and also cataloging things in a notebook so I can discuss/look over what I have to people I know, or just for me.

That's not saying much for the work and planning I still have yet to do, like I want to bring my cat with me eventually and I need to make sure I have enough to keep up my prescriptions so I am not struggling, along with everything else, like bills, food, rent, etc…

hopefully this won't end up being just me running in circles not getting things actually done, I really want to try to make progress.…Trying to stay positive with careful steps, I don't want to rush out there and learn the hard way, there is just so much that can go wrong, but I am restless and I want to get it done and be out there sooner than later...

Re: I want to say Bye to my old life.

        Hello there,
Thank you for using our bulletin service.
It sounds like you have had some issues with your mother but you are willing to make things right with her. It shows a lot of maturity to realize that maybe you and your mother just need to spend some time apart to cool off.
It is really impressive that you have been looking into all of the things that can happen you when you go out on your own and making sure that you have an attainable plan for the future. Making sure that you have a workable plan when you go out on your own is something that a lot of youth do not think about so it is great that you are being realistic.
We are happy to hear that you are trying to stay positive and keep a cool head even though you really want to leave soon. It does sound like you have a lot of things sorted out but if you even want to talk to someone more about your plan or need help brainstorming ideas of what your next steps should be you can give us a call. One of our trained liners would be more than happy to talk to you more about your situation. 1-800-RUNAWAY
