  • My family is ruined and i don't know what to do

I am 12 years old and want to run away. Where to? I don't know, anywhere but here. In fact, I have run away several times and my parents just watch me leave and when I come back two hours later ignore me. They don't care that I may never come back. My mom has no sympathy for me. The past three years I don't think there has been a single day which we have spent the entire 24 hours together and not fought and I ended up crying. I know that makes me sound like a baby but she doesn't take me seriously! Sometimes I climb over the handrail and stand on the other side of my balcony and contemplate jumping and she calls me an attention seeker and a stupid child. If we have a fight and I’m completing an assignment, my dad would grab me by the wrist, pull me to my room and tell me not to leave, I can fail my assignment. They criticize everything I do and it tears me apart. The stress of school makes me want to stay home but if I do stay home I have to stay with my Mom and that is hell. I hate my life and I want to end it. My brother is always favorited by them and it isn't fair. I get in so much trouble for little things but for the big things he does he gets way less of a punishment. I have anxiety & depression and the only people I love are my grandparents and my best friend Ellie. (Ellie isn't her name but I wish not to mention her actual one) Ellie and I always talk about how we want to be adopted into the same family etc. and we both aren't having a good time at the moment. My parents never listen when I want to talk, don’t care about me and are so fake. They are always so nice when their friends are over but as soon as they leave it’s back to pulling hair, slapping, slamming doors and screaming. When I need to talk to someone (not them) I can't talk to my friends because they take my phone away. Please someone help me. I don't know how much longer I can hold on.

Thank you for writing to us here at National Runaway Safeline (NRS).

With everything that you have been going through at home with your parent’s it took a lot of courage for you to reach out. We appreciate you sharing your feelings about the situation. Well done. It sounds like you’re quite overwhelmed by things at home right now and you mentioned being harmed. We’re sorry you’re going through this. You don't deserve to be hurt in any way. It is not your fault that they treat you this way. If you are at risk of any danger or feeling unsafe, we encourage you to reach out to 911 or seek emergency assistance immediately.

You may also be able to report any mistreatment to Child Protective Services.
Child Help USA 1-800-422-4453 is an organization that helps protect minors from being harmed. It may also be a good place to explore options for staying with another family member or someone you trust as far as transferring custody.
It sounds like you feel good about your grandparents and your friend “Ellie”. That’s great. Perhaps you might talk with them about the way you have been feeling. It’s important that you take care of yourself. Sometimes things may feel bleak but you are not alone.

We understand that the situation has grown frustrating and upsetting to you.
When things seem chaotic it can be hard to know what to do or which way to turn.
Doing harm to yourself does not have to be an option. Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.
If you are feeling depressed or ever having suicidal thoughts contact the National Suicide prevention Lifeline 1-800-273-8255.

Often, having a safe space to share how you’re feeling may bring a variety of solutions previously not thought of. We want you to know that we are here as support to help you through this challenging time.
If you would like to talk more in detail please call 1-800-Runaway (786-2929) or chat soon through our website (click on the chat button) if you are unable to call in.
You did such a wonderful job reaching out today. Good for you.
