  • Don't know how to get there

My mom has told me to leave lots of times, because she hates me, wishes I would die and is sick of me. If I do and go to my dad's she says I have to come back. She only likes my brother and my dad understands this. Now I'm 15 and he'said 13. I've basically been doing things for my self since 2nd grade. She's also been physically and verbally(?) abusing me for that long. I tried telling my teacher what she was doing in 2nd grade, but they said my brother needs more help because he's only in kindergarten. I haven't told anyone else bease of that and I pretend that she's a cool person and very nice. Everyone around me thinks she is an OK person and I don't wanna mess that up. I finally have someone to go to and enough money to leave, but they live in Indiana and I'm in California. All the ways I know of to get there you need a parents permission and I don't know what to do.

Re: Don't know how to get there

    Hello there,

Thank you for reaching out to us and sharing your story. It sounds like you are going through a lot at home. You deserve to feel comfortable at home without a constant worry that you’re going to be told to leave by your mom. Because she is legally responsible for you, she is obligated to provide you with a safe place to live. It must be really confusing being told to leave and then being told to return home.

No one has the right to hurt you. Abuse of any kind is not okay. You are very brave for sharing this with us. It’s understandable that you would feel uneasy about telling other because of the bad experience you had when you were younger. Reporting abuse is also an option. We know that this can be really intimidating and really difficult for a lot of people. Here's a little bit of information in case that's an option that you're considering. If abuse is happening at home, you have the right to report it to the proper authorities. If you feel like this is an option you want to explore, you may find this website helpful: https://www.childhelp.org/child-abuse/. We can also help you to file a report if that’s the route you are considering.

It’s great that you have money saved and have someone you trust to support you in Indiana. It’s important to have people outside of your family that you can turn to in tough times. If getting to this person isn’t an option, another resource that you might be able to look into if you’re looking for a safe place to go and talk to someone, would be to visit The National Safeplace website (www.nationalsafeplace.org). This organization provides access to immediate help and supportive resources for youth in need. You can look up your city and state to see if there are any safe places near you listed. They are usually places like designated agencies, shelters, fire stations, libraries, etc. So that is always an option if you feel like talking to someone in person and what has been going on or if you just need of a safe place to stay.

You are always here if you want to contact us directly to talk about these options or any other options that you’re thinking about. Our hotline is open 24/7 if you call in and we also have an online chat open in the evenings if you prefer. We aren’t here to judge or tell you what to do, but we can listen and talk through some of the things that are stressing you out if you want to.

    We hope this is helpful!

    Stay strong,
    NRS
