  • I need help

My dad screams at my whole family every night and I'm tired of it. He blames my mom for having our house be messy when my house is perfectly fine. He screams about nonsense stuff and no one seems to stick up for ourselves but me. I hate my dad and want to leave and live with my grandma. He is making me feel as if the rest of my life is going to be messed up knowing he basically screamed and yelled at my family my whole life. Living with my grandma would be a lot better. Is there anyway I could? I'm only 15.

Thank you for contacting the National Runaway Safeline.

It sounds like you’re having a difficult time at home with your dad being upset all of the time. Home should be a place that you can relax and feel safe. It is understandable why you would want to leave to your grandma’s house. Unfortunately your parents have custody of you and if they don’t want you to live anywhere else you cannot. The only way that this can be changed is if they give custody to someone else or it is taken away by the court.

It’s great that you are strong enough to stick up to your father but one option you have is to have us conference call with your father. This might be beneficial for you because our conference calls provide support that is unbiased and moderated by one of our trained liners. This would give you the platform to express what you are feeling to your father without having to worry about him yelling over you.

You might also want to consider having a talk with your grandparents and making sure that they are on board with you going to live with them. You might even be able to get them to help support you talking to your dad about the move.

If you have any other questions or would like talk about other options feel free to give us a call 1-800-RUNAWAY
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
