    Re: Help me

Hi. Thank you for reaching out to the National Runaway Switchboard. We are glad that you decided to write in to us today. We are an anonymous and confidential crisis line so we hope that this is a safe place for you to talk about what is going on.

It sounds like for the last three years you have been unhappy with your mom and your situation at home. It is definitely understandable that it would be hard for you to deal with your mom’s mood swings. It sounds like you would want her to be a level-headed mom all the time—not switching from trying to be your friend to ignoring you. Is that right? We are sorry to hear that this has been going on for so long. How have you been coping with this? Have you tried anything to try and make the situation better? How did that go? Is there anything that you have wanted to try in the past that you would want to try again?

Leaving home is a big decision. What do you think things would be like if you moved to New York? Who would you live with there? What are your plans? We can understand that it is frustrating to feel like your mom can’t let go. But, if you try and see things from her side, can you understand why she might be hesitant to let you move away from her? We don’t know where you live currently, but it could be scary for your mom to think about you living far away when she is legally responsible for your well being.

As we said before, it does seem like things are really rough for you at home though. It sounds like you believe that it is your home life that is making you depressed and leading you to have thoughts of suicide. Is that right? You definitely deserve to be happy and we are concerned for you. Have you ever told anyone about how you are feeling? Do you think talking to a trusted adult might relieve some of the pressure? What about going to counseling? If you are ever worried that you might hurt yourself, you can definitely call the National Suicide Hotline at 1-800-273-TALK.

You asked what might happen if you runaway and get caught. If you runaway from home, your mom has the right to file a runaway report with the police. This means that you would be listed in the police database as a runaway. What the police do with this varies. Some police might go out and look for you, while others may just take the report. If the police picked you up, they would have to call your legal guardian (which sounds like it is your mother) and may hold you in a detention facility until she is able to get you home. Another issue to think about is what may happen to the people you are staying with. Most areas usually have laws against “harboring a runaway”. This means that whomever you stay with may face legal consequences for keeping you in their home without contacting your mother or the police.

We know that this is probably a lot to think about. If you want, you can call us at 1-800-RUNAWAY to talk more about the situation and your rights. We are here 24/7 and we are anonymous and confidential.

    Best of luck,
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
