I'm a 21 year old community college student in Dallas. I have a part time job and go to school part time. My mom and I live alone with our 3 pets: a cat and two elderly dogs. We have been living in this house since 2002 so about 14 years. The house is run down and needs repairs. I can't even have friends or family over and have a "normal" life. I want to start over and preferably by myself since my mom still treats me like a little kid. I love my mom and I wouldn't move far from her but whenever I try to have the moving out convo with her she gets all defensive and makes excuses on why we cant leave. She says I dont make enough money to be on my own and that we cant get a new place while we still have our old dogs. She has said that the plan is basically to wait till the dogs die before we can go elsewhere. I believe there are other and better options we can choose. The whole situation makes me anxious and stresses me out. I dont know what to do or who I can go to to talk about the situation...so if you could give me some advice, that would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Re: My mom gets mad whenever I try talking to her...
Hi there,
We’re sorry to hear about your situation. You sound like you’d like to move on with life and get a fresh start somewhere apart from your mom, or at least at a new home for both of you. Of course, since you are 21 you are considered a legal adult and can leave home at any time. You don’t need your mom’s permission to do this, though it sounds like she tries to pressure you into staying. We never tell anyone what to do, and it’s up to you whether you decide to part from your mom, stay where you are at, or look for a new place for both of you. There might be programs in your area that offer rental assistance for people in your situation. Perhaps you can talk to a counselor at the college you attend to see how they might be able to help or what suggestions they have. Or, if you’d like to give us a call we can look in our database to see what independent living programs might be available in your area. We also have other resources we may be able to refer you to like counseling agencies. We would just need to know your city and state when you call. Our number is 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) and we are here 24/7. Good luck, and congratulations on the part time job and going to school!

Re: My mom gets mad whenever I try talking to her...
Hello again,
We just noticed that you did give us your city. Sorry about that. Of course, you can still give us a call, but you might want to look at the following website along with talking to a counselor. It looks like there are some resources for people that need help with bills, achieving independent living, and things like that.
Again, Good luck!
