Hi im trying to leave my mom when im 18 . Ill be turning 18 in a few months. Shes very over protective and has this mentality that i have to live with and i cant go to college away because she wants me to be with her. I honestly am not the type of person that can live locked up like that. I want to be able to have my lige and be able to go to the college of my choice. My mother wont even let me go to the store or the park.i have in fact had other problems with her and no longer want to put up with her offences and her harsh words against me, for instance the time she said she wish she never had me and that ever since i came to her life i ruined it, etcim planning ln leaving right before college after i turn 18 . Can my mom force me to come back and if she trys to find me can she force me to return. She threatens me by saying that she can still rule over me untill im 21 is this true. I live in california and i know that the legal adult age is 18. I would just like these questions answered before i further my planning. Thx

RE: Run away when im 18
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to NRS to help with your situation. It sounds like you are struggling with your relationship with your momand you are looking for a way out to feel more independent. It must be difficult for you trying to become your own person and go off to college, but feel as though your mom is not supporting you. You sound like you know where you want to go in life and if college is something you want to pursue then that is a great first step. You are correct in that 18 is the legal age for being able to leave home, unless your mom is your guardian under court orders, which sometimes happen for individuals with disabilities. Unless this is the case, you are free to leave when you turn 18 and your mother cannot legally prevent you from moving out. You can always give us a call to seek other options for how to talk with your mom about the issues going on. We are available 24/7 and are always here to listen.
Good luck! Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
