  • I am 17 years old in less then a month .

I want to move out of my parents house. I have wanted to for years since I was fifteen . My mom and dad hate me and have said it before to my face .... the only difference this time , is that now I have the power to be stable without my parents.... I know FOR A FACT THAT I'M NOT BEING RASH. I just want to know if any charges could be brought upon me since I'm not 18 yet. I have told my dad that I am leaving ... but what could be the penalty.

    Hi there,

Thank you for contacting us here at the National Runaway Safeline (NRS) through the online forum. Being told you are hated by family sounds quite painful and angering. It seems it has made you want to leave home for a few year now. You mentioned that you are looking to leave home at 17, and you ask a really good question about penalties. Since we are not legal experts, we can only provide general information on what we have learned.

Each varies on laws regarding minors and age of majority. Most states set 18 as the age of majority which means a minor then becomes their own legal guardian upon their 18th birthday. If you were to leave home at 17, the police may be notified by your parent(s) as that is their rights as your guardian(s). Running away is generally considered a status offense as a minor. If your parent/guardian(s) did file a runaway report police may bring you back home. This of course depends on your local law enforcement and how they handle runaway cases. It may be best to reach out to local non-emergency police at your local police department to inquire more about protocol and if they will try to make a 17 year old go back home.

Since you are almost 18, it may be helpful to think of ways that may help you get through the remaining time until you are 18. However, it is ultimately your decision to leave or stay. We can help explore some options with you if you would like.

If you would like to discuss your situation more or would like resources to legal aid, please reach out by phone or chat so that we may offer support to you. We are available by phone 24/7 but have limited hours with chat.

We look forward to your phone call or chat soon.

    Best,

    NRS
