  • I'm 17 and will be 18 in 4 months

I'm 17 and will be 18 in May. My mom is very strict. She took me out of public school my Junior year because I got in trouble (long story). I have been on & off with the same guy for 2 years & she knows about him but she doesn't know we're still communicating because he moved. She never really liked him before she even knew him. She never let me be around him so I too lit upon myself and started sneaking around with him. We eventually got caught & I was grounded. She keeps me from my friends. I have no social life except for on my phone. My friends always ask to hangout but I know that's an automatic no. She's been controlling my life and treats me like I'm 9. I've thought about running away plenty of times but I know she'll call the cops on me so I never do it. I want to runaway when I'm 18 but my family will judge me but I'm tired of living here. I need help!!! And talking to her will not help I've tried before & she doesn't care what I think or feel. Her mind is made up , there's no changing it.

Thanks for reaching out to the National Runaway Safeline.

We are sorry you are going through what sounds like a difficult time at home.
We understand that sometimes parents can be very controlling making one feel stressed and frustrated.
What do you think might help to allow you to get out of the house and maybe see some of your friends?
Communication sometimes gets difficult and might even require a third party like a counselor, therapist etc. to help improve it. Might that be a consideration for you?

Your feelings are important and should matter. Counseling may be a way of getting your feelings about the situation heard. You did great by reaching out and expressing some of your emotions.
It sounds like you thought about running away but decided against it. You said you will turn eighteen in May.
    What are your plans?
You might consider thinking about what it is you would like to do once you do turn eighteen and how you can be independent.

You are trying to get through a tough time and getting the opportunity to vent can be helpful.
