Re: my uncle wants to kick me out

Thanks so much for writing. It sounds like your dealing with a difficult situation at the moment and trying to figure out what to do. You mentioned that you have been staying with your uncle because your mom is out of the country and you’re unable to stay with your dad. It sounds like living with your dad has never been a good or safe situation because he drinks a lot. How long has that been going on for? Have you ever spoken with anyone about your dad’s drinking and that he has pushed and screamed at you before? Nobody deserves to be treated like that and it’s understandable that you don’t feel comfortable at home with your dad. How long have you been staying with your uncle? When did your uncle start having problems with you and saying he was going to kick you out? You mentioned that they were trying to pressure you to go to Central America? Is that where your mom is currently located? How is your relationship with your mother? Have you been able to talk with her about the situation at all?

One thing you mentioned is that you have a friend who has been very supportive and you may be able to live with him, but his mom is afraid that your dad will press charges. Now you said that you are currently 18, and in most states the age of majority, when you are considered an adult, is 18. So if you decided that you wanted to go stay with a friend, your dad may not be able to do much to stop you. Now we are not lawyers here so we don’t know the specific laws in your area but that may be a possibility. How long do you think you could stay with your friend’s family? Do you think that you could stay there until you finished school? It’s good that you have your friend and his family as support and that they are there for you if you need them. One thing you could possibly do to check on the laws in your area would be to contact your local police and see if you are considered an adult at the age of 18. Perhaps they would be able to tell you if you could leave your uncle’s house and stay with your friend, even if your father doesn’t give you permission. Do you think it would be helpful to talk with someone from school, like a teacher or counselor? Perhaps they could help talk with you and advocate for your situation. Re: my uncle wants to kick me out

Thank you for keeping us updated on your situation. It’s very difficult to try and remain safe while continuing with your education. Your safety is very important and can have an effect on a lot of your decisions.

It’s good that you have a supportive relationship with your mom. How long will she be in Central America?

Have you contacted your local police department and inquired about the age of majority for your area? They would also be able to tell you if a previous runaway report would have an effect on you now. You could also contact legal aid in your area and they would be able to answer your questions. If you felt comfortable telling us where you are, we could give you that number.

You could also give us a call at 1-800-RUNAWAY. We are a completely confidential hotline and there is someone here 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We can help find you local resources and can do conference calls if you need help calling them. We wish you the best of luck!
