  • Just wondering

I’m not of age (1 and I have been kicked out various times. I live with my grandparents (my grandma married a rich guy) and they wouldn’t care if I left or not. If I “run away” and they do not file a report or look for me could I get in trouble for missing school or not being home?

Thank you for contacting the National Runaway Safeline. We are sorry to hear that things have broken down between you and your grandparents such that you are looking to leave home. While we are not legal experts and we cannot predict the future, it is our general understanding that the police will not pursue you if there is no runaway report filed. However, if you are truant from school, the school might report your absences to your grandparents/guardians and that may open a CPS investigation into potential abuse/neglect. It might be a good idea, if you are looking to runaway, to continue going to school. If you want to talk more about what running away might look like or what options you may have, please do not hesitate to reach out to us on our 24/7 hotline 1-800-786-2929 or on chat at 1800runaway.org.
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
