Re: help me not get caught

Thanks for contacting the National Runaway Switchboard. From what you wrote, it sounds like you are having a hard time at home. You certainly don’t deserve to be yelled at for no reason. Home should be a place where you feel safe and supported. Have you ever been able to talk with your dad about how he is treating you? What about another family member or friend? It doesn’t seem like you are feeling very supported at home. Is there anyone that you can think of that can support you right now?

We are here 24/7 for you. Running away is a big decision to make so it is important to think things through before leaving. Some big questions to think about are:

    • What else can I do to improve my home situation before I leave?
    • What would make me stay at home?
    • How will I survive?
    • Is running away safe?
    • Who can I count on to help me?
    • Am I being realistic?
    • Have I given this enough thought?
    • What are my other options?
    • If I end up in trouble, who will I call?
    • When I return home, what will happen?

Do any of these questions bring up any thoughts you would like to share? From your questions, it seems like your main concern is where you would stay and whether or not your dad would be able to find you. Sometimes when youth run away they stay with friends or family, but as you mentioned these might not be places you can go to and not be found. One other option is a runaway shelter, but if you go to a shelter they will have to call your dad and let them know where you are. We can’t tell you where to go, but we are here to talk about your options.

We are here 24/7 and we are anonymous and confidential. Give us a call if you are willing and able.
