  • Needing Freedom

I'm 18 and my boyfriend is 23 and we've been together about a year. We live an hour and a half away from each other. He comes over here to see me all the time and spends a lot of time with me and my family. I've been to his house only 3 times because my mom won't ever let me go over there to see him and get to know his family a lot better. She always has some excuse as to why I can't go se him. His parents are very nice and said I could stay at there house so I wouldn't have to drive after dark or anything but my mom still won't go for it even though we will be sleeping in different rooms. I've tried to talk to her about it but she never gives me an answer, just get mad at me. My boyfriend and I have also tried to talk to her together and the same thing happens. She's said before it's because she doesn't know them but when we try to arrange to meet up and have dinner or something she always refuses to go. His sister has an apartment and says I can be her roommate but I don't know how I can leave home without my mom completely hating me. I either want to move out so I can do what I want or have more freedom living at my house I just don't know how to get that. Not sure which one would be the best option for me right now.

    RE: Needing Freedom

    Hi there,

Thank you for contacting us here at the National Runaway Safeline (NRS). It sounds like you are feeling limited and confined while living at home. You mentioned wanting more freedom to see your boyfriend and get to know the family better, but your mom tends to refuse to let you go over there. It sounds frustrating to not be able to do that especially after several attempts to try to speak with her alone, with your boyfriend, and even attempts to have her meet with his family too. You are trying to do the right thing by involving her. It seems your mom has some hesitancy with letting you you see him or his family at their home that you are confused and unsure about. It seems you may just need a space to explore your options, and we can help you with that.

If you would like to talk more and explore some of those options, please reach out to us through our crisis line or chat service. The decision is ultimately yours, but we can sort through those options with you.

We wish you well and look forward to talking with you.

    Best,

    NRS
