  • 17 almost 18

I turn 18 here shortly like in four months. My mother and her Boyfriend are treat me horrible, all they do is talk down to me like I'm always doing something bad. I usually do what my mother asks of me and i baby sit her other kids for free all the time and i get nothing in return. Yet I'm still talked down to. I have lot's of other places to go to. Like my bestfriend said I can move in with her if my family problems start to get worse and they are. But I'm afraid my mom will call the police because shes not okay with me moving out. so i was wondering if there is any legal easy fast way I can get out of my mothers house before i just say screw it and run away.

    Hi there,

It sounds like you are having a tough time seeing eye to eye with your mom. From what you shared, it sounds like you have a lot of responsibility and are feeling unappreciated for what you do. There's a lot to consider and think about with running away, so we are glad you reached out for help.

We aren't legal experts here, so we don't know all of the laws in every city/state. If your mom does call the police and file a runaway report, there is a chance you could be taken back home if you come in contact with the police. They may or may not actively look for you once she makes that report. It really depends on the discretion of the police where you are. In most states, moving out legally requires consent of your parents. Also, most times there is no fast and easy way to move out of your parents home when you are a minor. If you do decide to leave, you may want to think of a backup plan in case your initial one doesn't work out. If you do go to live with your friend, and your mom gets the police involved, your friend could potentially be charged with harboring a runaway.

In the meantime, you may want to contact any local legal aid services in your area to see if they can help answer some of these questions. The non-emergency police can often be very helpful as well.
