Hi, I’m Anthony, and I’m FtM. Last night my parents found out by my mother barging into the bathroom while I was changing. She knew what my binder was for and started to emotionally abuse me. Now she makes me change in front of her and both parents use every opportunity to purposely misgender me. What can I do? I have a sister that lives near and is supportive of me but wants me to live with my parents until college. I’m 16 and felling hopeless. I am afraid my mother going to try to” fix” me by forcing me to take estrogen. I’m worried about my mental health. Please help me.

Hello Anthony,
Thanks for having the courage to reach out to NRS and share what is going on with you. We are sorry to hear about how your parents have been treating you. You do not deserve to be misgendered, emotionally abused, or forced to change yourself in order to conform to their expectations.
You have been strong in tough circumstances, and we want to commend you for having the strength to reach out. If you also wanted to reach out to organizations that specialize in LGBTQ issues, the Trans Lifeline is available at 877-565-8860 and online at translifeline.org. There is also the LGBT National Hotline available through phone at 1-888-843-4564 and online at glbhotline.org. These organizations may have additional resources that we do not have access to, and may have more knowledge about the rights you have as an individual not to be forced to take estrogen pills against your will.
You mentioned some concerns about your mental health. You are valuable and people, like your sister, care deeply for your safety. If you ever wanted to seek professional services for what you are going through, SAMHSA or the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration is available at 1-877-726-4727 or online at samhsa.gov.
Although emotional abuse is not often treated with the weight it deserves, Child Help could be a good resource for learning more about the abuse reporting process and what it would entail, if you felt comfortable; they can be reached at 1-800-422-4453 or online at childhelp.org. Your safety is always a priority, and if you felt like you needed to leave, there are resources available such as the National Safe Place network accessible online at nationalsafeplace.org, or through texting 69866 (SAFE & your location).
If you would like to talk about other resources and support, such as safety planning, feel free to call our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or use our Live Chat.
We hope this information was helpful and take care.
