  • can i leave?

I am 17 years old and my guardians are telling me i have to be out on nov. 20th which is a month before my birthday. I absolutely hate being here they treat me like a little kid unless its convient for them like wanting me to go to work and give them my whole check which has happened recently. also they blame me for them not being able to pay their bills because i lost my job. my uncle doesnt and wont work and my aunt is trying to get disability. im tired of trying to support them and their 2 kids. so my question is can i leave without any legal trouble?

    re: can I leave?

    Hello,

We’re sorry to hear that you are having to move out about a month before your birthday. That must be upsetting to hear that they want you to leave. You mentioned that you are trying to support them with your income, since your aunt and uncle are your guardians. That can be difficult to get out of, if they are insisting. If there is anything that you can think of that will help with this, you may want to take that into consideration. Maybe look into setting up a bank account for yourself once you turn 18? That could help.

We aren’t sure exactly where you live, so it’s hard to say exactly what would happen if you leave. In a lot of places, if you leave and your guardians file a runaway report, the police would have to take you back home. At the same time, being that you are 17 right now some police may not do anything. They might consider you an adult about to be 18 and they may not take you back at all. But again, we aren’t legal experts so if you could contact your local non-emergency police for clarification.

Anything that you decide will ultimately be left up to you. We are non-directive here, but you can always contact us anytime that you need help. For further support, we strongly encourage you to contact us directly at 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929), and look forward to your call.
