  • I'm 14 and my mother is so entitled and mean and my dad doesn't do anything about it

(this is mostly concerning my mom) she is a very rude person. she is entitled, mean, and acts like she is a queen or something because she is the "mom". I get punished for not talking back, but for fighting for what i believe. for example, i have become a christian almost 2 years ago. i only told my mom because i thought she would accept it, which she acted like she did the first day. but the very next day, she was yelling at me and screaming at me telling me id "go to the lake of fire" and "i had no idea what i was talking about." her religion is a hebrew israelite who believes in Yah and its taking over my life. but besides that, she always has to get her way she she always yells, screams, etc. she doesnt even rlly have a job..she makes me pay for the things I want or she makes my dad buy it. she is very tempered and it drives me nuts. at this point i feel like i have nobody to turn to. i am misreable because my mom wants everything done her way. she thinks she is ALWAYS right. she also is very negative and mean and i dont want to live in the same house as her anymore. it has gotten to the point where i have a countdown on my phone to the last day of high school so i can go to college and move far away from her.

Hi, it sounds like you are going through a tough time and we are glad you reached out to us for help.

Living with parents can be frustrating, especially when they don’t share our same views/values/perspectives. 14 can definitely be an age where we are figuring out and deciding who we are and who we are not. If your mom is not supportive of who you are becoming, are there other people in your life who are? Joining clubs/organizations specific to certain interests could be a great way to meet others with your same interest (like a Christian church group, for example).

One thing that can be stressful about living with parents is that they get to make the rules “because they are the parent.” It may not always feel fair, but it might be the reality. How can you cope and stay sane/healthy in your current situation with you mom who always has to get her way? Do you have friends you can vent to, or a trusted adult like a teacher or neighbor you can talk to?

We are always here at 1-800-RUNAWAY if you are needing support and want to talk things out. We can work with you to discuss what’s going on and explore some options you may have available to you. We are here 24 hours a day, every day, so we hope to hear from you if you are comfortable calling in.

Thanks again for contacting us, and please stay safe.

Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
