  • im 20 years old and need to leave

I'm 20 years old and i live in virginia. I know i can move as i please but both my mom and step-dad are very controlling and manipulative. I don't think they're bad people but they have taken a toll on my mental health and they refuse to accept me (I am transgender). they also wont let me get a job, despite the fact that i need the money and i am older than 18. My girlfriend lives in alabama and she is willing to take me but shes in a tough situation as well. i also cannot bring my dog, he helps with my anxiety. I have no idea where to go if i can get out and if my girlfriend loses her house.

    Hey there,

Thank you for being able to reach out to us here at the National Runaway Safeline. It seems like you are going through a pretty tough time at this point in your life and we want you to know that we are here to listen and to help in the best way that we can.

From what you shared, it seems like you have been wanting to leave home but are not sure of a place to go. Here at the National Runaway Safeline, we have a large database with plenty of resources throughout the country where we would be able to see if there are any shelters or transitional living programs in your area. It’s great that your girlfriend wants to help with your situation, perhaps if you are able to give us a call we would be able to look up some traveler’s aid in your area.

We hope that we were able to help you think a little more about your options and brainstorm some more with you, if you feel like you would still need some more support or go through some more options, please feel free to reach out to us here at 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) we are here 24/7. We also have a live chat service which is available from 4:30 PM to 11:30 PM CST. We wish you the best of luck in whatever it is you decide to do and hope to hear from you soon.

        RE:

        Hello,

Thanks for reaching out to NRS again. It sounds like things at home have been continuously stressful for you which has led you to make a plan to leave. However, as mentioned you are still scared of how your parents may react or any potential consequences which is a very normal feeling to have when making a big decision such as leaving home. It seems your parents' reactions and thoughts have an impact on you and is causing a bit of stress for you. It is often helpful to have someone to brainstorm ideas with or simply talk to about the feelings you are having to help clear up some of your uncertainties and identify the best option for yourself. We are here for you and we can talk more about the fears and concerns you are having about leaving if you would like. Your happiness is ultimately the most important thing, but it is your decision to choose to leave.

Please reach out by phone or chat for more support. We are 24/7, nonjudgmental, and non-directive. We are here to listen and to help.

We wish you well and hope to hear from you soon.

        Best,

        NRS
