  • What should I do

My mom cheated on my dad when I was 4, this lead to me having a very irregular childhood. She obviously feels guilty and its caused her to be insanely unbearably overly attached to me, as the years have past my mom has changed ALOT and not for the better. She is irrational and occasionally mentally unstable. Everyone who comes to my house tells me they think she's psychotic. I really want to leave my house as she has driven me to the point of contemplating suicide. But I have nowhere to go... what should I do?

    Re: What should I do

    Hi there,

Thank you so much for reaching out to us. It sounds like you are really going through a lot and we are sorry to hear about all of this. We are here to help out as much as we can.

You shared that you have been driven to thoughts of suicide because of everything going on with your mom. This is a really serious thing to be thinking about. We’d like to pass along the National Suicide Hotline at (800) 273 TALK for any time you are thinking about ending your life. If you feel that you are ever in need of immediate assistance you can always call 911.

It sounds like your relationship with your mom has been pretty unbearable recently and you’re wanting to get out. You said that you do not have anywhere to go which is often a barrier in this type of situation. We’re not experts, but generally if you were to go to a shelter they would need to get consent if you are under the age of 18 from a legal guardian. Some shelters are different than others though, in that they will let you stay 24 hours until having to notify or get consent from a legal guardian. As an alternative to a shelter, people to stay with temporarily might be a friend or a relative that you feel comfortable enough with disclosing what’s been going on at home and the reason you’d like to stay temporarily.

Please do call or chat if you would like to talk further, we’re here to listen and here to help as much as we can.

    Best,
    NRS
