  • Kicked out.

I'm 17 and I was kicked out for the first time last night. I slept at my grandparents who luckily enough love down the street. I was kicked out again today and I'm still at my grandparents. But I'm wondering if I could be emancipated? Like I said in 17, I work two jobs and I'm taking college classes. When it comes to living I might just stay here at my grandparents?

I'm mostly worried about being called a runaway and getting my GPs in trouble, my mom wants me to stay but my Dad couldn't care less. I'm honestly so lost and stressed and I just don't know what to do.

    Hi there,

Thank you for reaching out to us at the National Runaway Safeline. We are here 24/7 to listen and to support.

We're sorry to hear about what you've been going through and want you to know that you deserve to feel safe and happy in your home. We can understand how everything that has transpired in the last few days would be really stressful.

We are not legal experts, but generally speaking it is considered neglect to be kicked out of your home because you are a minor and that would be reportable against your parents. This could also effect the outcome if you did get reported as a runaway, because you would be able to tell the police that you were kicked out. If you don't want to report your parents, emancipation could be an option. Emancipation looks different in every state so we would need more information to help. If you wanted to give us a call at 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) we could walk you through anything we have discussed above as well as give you general information about emancipation in your state and possible legal aid numbers. Don't hesitate to give us a call so we can help you in the best way we can.

    Stay safe,

    NRS
