  • I need to get out of my house

I am 15 and I need to get out of my house. My mom is mean and my sisters are violent. My dad was abusive but he moved out two years ago. Now he lives up the street. My sisters take after him. One of them has broken my fingers and the other likes hitting randomly. I try to avoid my family as much as i can. I’ve been hospitalized for my second suicide attempt recently and I just got out. I think of my friends, teachers, and people from the hospital as my family. But I can’t live with them because my mom won’t let me. She won’t even let me sleep over at my friends house to get away from them. I have ptsd from my dad and my mom and my sisters and I hate being around them, but I can’t leave. I have talked to my therapist and she says it’s impossible but I’ll die if I am stuck in my house until college. Please help.

Hello there, thanks for reaching out today. Sounds like you have endured so much lately between the violence at home and attempting suicide for the second time recently. We are so glad that you are still with us today. You deserve to live in a safe environment where you can thrive, rather than being under the constant threat of violence from your sisters.

If you do not already know, you are allowed to report each instance of abuse that goes on in your home, including being harmed by your sisters, to child protective services. Typically, if they investigate they would work to intervene at home, provide services, and possibly remove you if they find that the abuse is putting you in danger. To learn more about your reporting options you might reach out to the expert child advocates at Child Help 1-800-422-4453. You can always call us here at 1-800-RUNAWAY if you would like assistance calling out to your local abuse hotline. If you ever feel like you are in immediate danger please call 911. Your safety and well-being is incredibly important.

You mentioned that you have a therapist; which is great. It is important to lean on others for support when you are feeling down. If you haven't already, you might try to surround yourself with friends and trusted folks who are your support system. If you ever are having suicidal thoughts or feeling down you can always call or chat the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255 or www.suicidepreventionlifeline.org. You also can always call us at 1-800-RUNAWAY, we really want to be a support for you. If you are interested in getting additional mental health services we can also look for local resources in your area. You are not alone and there are people and organizations out there that want to help.

Please know that we are here for you and you can call us anytime. We can talk through your situation, help brainstorm your options, provide support, and look for local resources for you.

    Best of luck,

    NRS
