  • Moving out at 18

My birthday is in October in which I will turn 18, I work a full time job that barely pays, and I'm looking for a second job to make some more money. My parents make me pay them about $400 a month and most goes to them to which they are saving for me for when I do move out. However they tell me I'm going to live on the streets and suffer and not have the life that I want. So my question is what do I do? I can barely afford jack sh*t because of it. I want to know how I can survive in the real world without having to worry about finances. Again, I only have around five months and need to make good money fast. I need to know how to do so with little money....Thank you

Hi there, thanks for reaching out to NRS and sharing about what is going on. It sounds a little confusing how your parents are addressing your transition and how exactly they are supporting you. It seems that they are trying to give a sense of reality of paying rent with $400 a month, but are emotionally not being supportive. That can be a little frustrating.

We can’t give direct advice, but it may be good to start looking at place you want to live, start a budget with the expenses you might have, and start doing a mock monthly payment towards yourself or your parents. It may be good to discuss with them what they monthly cost are and how they navigate staying organized.
