  • 17... Not sure what to do...

I will be 18 in 9 months but i am having some home issues and i need to reach out to someone who doesn't personally know me. Being that I am too afraid to call a hotline i found this website...
My dad happens to have a strict muslim background, he used to punish my older sister and he hitted her many of times when she was under his roof, but now that i am the next one to leave the house and that she is an adult my dad is getting more strict being that he knows this is his last year that he has control over me. Recently he has used an assortment of items to abuse me with, and assortment of insults, and an assortment of threats towards me; "slut," "i will beat you," etc. This is scaring me and affecting my schooling, i used to self harm and am still a little suicidal yet i am avoiding relapsing. Not sure what to do exactly, my dad gave me the option to either leave or stay and possibly get beaten. The only thing that is making this worse is that i have witnessed my dad hit my baby sibling three times... i need money for college but i cant even focus to get the grades required for college. I tell my mom all the time to leave him and she doesn't listen, most of the advise I have heard offline, from my mom, or from my sister is to bair and grin it.... but i am not sure how much longer i can take this... Help please.

    Hi there,

Thanks so much for opening up to us. It sounds like you are going through a really difficult time with your family right now. We’re so sorry this is happening to you. You do not deserve to be subjected to verbal or physical abuse, especially in your own home. You are so strong for avoiding relapse of self-harm despite the situation you are dealing with. You may feel like nobody can help you, but there are some resources that may be able to give you support or information. You can always call our hotline at 1-800-RUNAWAY and speak with someone here 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We also have a chat service available through our website every night 4:30-11:30 PM CST at www.1800runaway.org With both the hotline and the chat service, we discuss your situation in greater detail and help you explore options that might work for you. There might also be counseling and/or legal resources in your area that we can give you.

There are also a few other resources available to you right now. If you are dealing with self-harm or suicidal thoughts, you can contact the National Suicide Hotline (1-800-273-TALK) or the self-harm website www.twloha.com You also have the right to file an abuse report with your local police department. If you ever feel that you or your siblings feel unsafe, you can always call 911. Finally, you can talk to teacher or counselor at school. They might be mandated reporters which means they might be required by law to report instances or child abuse to child protective services.

You aren’t alone in this situation and we are always here to help you as best we can. We’re always here to listen and explore options at our call center. We wish you the best of luck in this stressful situation, and let us know if there’s anything else we can do to help.

    Stay safe,
    NRS
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
