  • How can I help my dad?

My Dad and Mom have been Fighting for so many year my older brother who’s is now 22 has whitenessed all their fights since he was little and he brought up that my dad always has hit my mom whenever he fights with her, and i started getting involved at age 9 where I would just sit in the corner and call my big brother. Now I’m 17 and i have a younger brother who is 11 and is whitenessing these fights now, Okay even my other little brother who is only 6 is noticing something wrong about our family. My dad always brings up the same fight over and over again, he can’t get over it! It’s 3:30am we came back from a party an hour ago and he’s drunk. He took a shower and started getting ready and I stopped him and told him to go back to bed because it’s 3 in the morning. He says he only wants air, my mom told me that he said he wants to go out and kill him self by the train, I was very worried so I kept telling him to stay in, my 22 year old brother walked in and was telling him to stay in, and my brother smokes so my dad doesn’t respect that of him, but he’s 22 so it’s his own life. My dad walked by the door my mom and I and my brother are by him telling him to stay, and he still doesn’t understand, he keeps talking back at us and just basically calling us out, asked why are we stopping him, and my mom is trying to grab him and he started pushing her so I pushed him then he grabbed me and pulled my hair. My brother held my dad down and now I’m in my room. I think I have lost respect for my dad. I really want to help him but he’s very stubborn, what should I do?

It sounds like you are in a really tough situation and we want you to know that you deserve to feel safe and loved in your home. If you feel that most of your dad's problems stem from drug or alcohol use, you can reach out to the Alcohol and Drug Helpline at 1-206-722-3700 and you could ask for support when you're a kid and your parent is abusing those substances. You can also go to to look up resources that help families cope with substance abuse and violence in their homes.

You or your mom could also reach out to the National Domestic Violence Hotline to get support or information that has to do with the violence that she faces. They can be reached at 1-800-799-7233. They might have thoughts about what you can do to get him the help that he needs. You could also look up counseling for him and family counseling as well. Give us a call at 1-800-786-2929 if you want help looking those up or want to talk about the options listed above with someone.
