My story is way to long to post here, but the jist of it is, I'm legally an adult, but my mom is so controlling over me, she doesn't let me get a job, go to school or learn how to drive. She is the most miserable, bitter woman I know and wants me to be like her.But I've had it. I need to leave and be independent and live my own life, but I have no idea what to do because she scares me and I'm scared she'll do something horrible and I have no where to go and no money....what do I do?

RE: I'm 18 and want to run away, but have nowhere to go and am afraid of my mom
Thank you so much for reaching out to us for help. We are so sorry to hear about how your mother treats you. It is understandable that you would want out. It sounds like her controlling and abusive behavior is really affecting your ability to make decisions about your future. We are here to listen and support you in any way that we can. You should know that if you are over the age of 18 and live in the United States, you are considered a legal adult. This means that your mother has no legal right to make decisions for you. If you are over 18, you have a legal right to move out, get a job, or go to school without consulting her, and she has no legal recourse to stop you. If you want to move out, we can help you come up with a plan and help you find resources if you need somewhere to stay. It sounds like you are interested in going to trade school and pursuing a career. Moving out on your own is a big step, and can be difficult. However, there are lots of ways to figure out how to pay for school and get a job even if your mother no longer supports you. If you need help, please don’t hesitate to give us a call. We are looking forward to hearing from you soon, and wish you the best of luck. Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
