  • Is it really too much or am I just overreacting?

Ever since I was in 7th grade, my parents have never left me alone. I'm lucky to have parents that support me, yes. But until now, when I'm already 18, they still won't let me do my thing. Like I have a school that I really want to go to and they know that I worked really hard to get to that school, and they also promised that I can go there if I pass. Now, I passed, but they just went back from their word, saying that I'm not ready and all that, that I can't live away from them yet. They ramble on how I can be in danger and I'm not mature enough to do anything yet, when I already trained myself just for this moment, and they can see that. I even got a scholarship so that they won't fuss over the finances. I just can't believe how little they trust me.

    Hi there,

Thank you for reaching out to us at the National Runaway Safeline. We are here 24/7 to listen and to support.

We're sorry to hear about what you have been facing at home and want you to know that you deserve to feel listened to and respected. While we are not legal experts, because you are 18 and considered a legal adult, you would be able to live and make decisions on your own and would not be considered a runaway. If you want help looking up resources for alternative youth housing or other resources that you might need, don't hesitate to give us a call at 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929). We also offer other services like a conference call option where a liner could mediate a conversation with you and your parents so that you can speak your needs openly and safely. A liner could also help you think through possible other adults in your life that you trust that could help advocate for you.

Let us know how we can best help,

    NRS
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
