  • Just want to movie out

I'm 17 and turn 18 in July and want to move out without permission and against my parents will. I plan on moving in with a friend who is 19 and is in his own place I work so I can supply myself with the things I need. I want to know if my parents will be able to get law enforcement to bring me back home? Also, if my friend is at legal risk?

Thank you for reaching out to us here at National Runaway Safeline. It sounds like you plan on moving in with a friend without your parents permission. In the state of North Carolina, you have to be at least 18 before you could move out without consent. If you decide to leave home before your birthday, your parents have the right to file a runaway report. With a runaway report, if the police find you they might return you home. Running away is not illegal but since your friend is over 18, he could get charged with harboring a runaway if you stay with him. However, since you are close to being 18 your local police may not accept a runaway report for you. You could contact your local police through their non emergency number. If you don't feel comfortable contacting the police, we could call them for you. Please feel free to contact us directly via our 24 hour crisis hotline (1-800-786-2929), email,or live chat.

I am 17 and live in Minnasota and I would like to move in with my boyfriend and his family because things at my house are getting harder. His family is fine with it but I would do this against my parents will. Would my parents be able to call the police on them? or will they get in legal problems because of me?

Thank you for reaching out to us here at National Runaway Safeline. We understand that it takes courage to seek help. It sounds like you want to move in with your boyfriend and his family. In the state of Minnesota, you have to be at least 18 before you can leave home without permission. If you decide to leave without your parent's consent, they have a right to file a runaway report. Your boyfriend's family could get charged with harboring a runaway if your parent's decide to press charges. The easiest way to leave would be to ask your parents for permission. Another option that you have is looking into emancipation laws for your state. Also, if there is any abuse at home you could contact Child Protective Services. If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact us directly via our 24 hour crisis hotline (1-800-786-2929), email, or live chat.
