Stability
I am 16 years old, and I live in Indiana. I have been having issues with mental illness reveling and my parents have been very judge mental and non-understanding of the problem. I decided once I have all my affairs in order I’m going to leave. I do online school, and I have a job. I have a former coworker offer me a room in her apartment, and another friend offer me a room in their house for a plan B, I have about $2,000 saved up and I work long hours. I plan to carpool and or Uber to work and I plan to continue my education, but school is over less than a month for the year anyways. My main questions are can you get emancipated if you are living away from home, and can you legally be away from your gaurdians without being charged with a crime. Thank you for taking the time to read this and o hope to hear back soon. Cheers xx

Hi there,
Thank you for contacting us at the National Runaway Safeline. We are not legal experts, but it looks like in Indiana to be emancipated you need to be able to show that you have the means to support yourself and a plan for independent living. You would not necessarily need to be living away from home at the current time to get emancipated. We'd encourage you to get legal aid or other help to get the most accurate information that you can. If you give us a call at 1-800-786-2929 we could look up possible numbers for you.
If you try to live away from home at 16 your parents could file a runaway report and you could be returned home. There could also be legal consequences for whomever you stay with for what is called harboring a minor. Once again, don't hesitate to give us a call if you want more information or need help finding numbers that could help you.
Best,
NRSPlease remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
