Thank you for reaching out to us here at National Runaway Safeline. We understand that it takes courage to seek help. You mentioned experiencing emotional abuse which may be reportable against your dad. Please keep in mind you by no means deserve any type of abuse, emotional or otherwise. Unfortunately, emotional abuse is often harder to provide evidence for compared to physical abuse which is often what CPS relies on when conducting an abuse investigation. That said, we can’t be 100% sure what the outcome will be if your local CPS decides to open a case based on what you share. Sometimes CPS decides to remove minors from the home and other times they offer services such as family counseling or mediation instead. The only way to know the outcome might be to reach out to them directly and if you’re ready to do that we are here to help you through that process. Reaching out to Child Help USA (1-800-422-4453) or www.childhelp.org may help to get a better understanding of what may happen before and after a report is made, they also provide information on how to transfer custody.

You mentioned that you want to leave home. We understand that might be challenging, however, maybe there’s another family member, relative, or a family friend who could help to communicate how you’re feeling to your dad. The second way is through Child Protective Services if safety is a concern. Lastly, you can also look into emancipation options. In most states you need to be at least 16 to be considered and demonstrate that you can support yourself financially and independently. Emancipation often can be a lengthy process and may even cost some money for court fees. We would be happy to look into legal resources if that’s something you are considering. Please feel free to contact us directly via our 24 hour crisis hotline (1-800-786-2929), email, or live chat if you have any questions or just want to talk.

We hope this response was helpful! We’d love to hear from you about your experience using our crisis email/forum.** Your feedback plays an important role in helping us improve our services to youth and families. Please click the link to fill out our survey: **https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/we_care_what_you_think.

    Please be safe.

i cant deal with this anymore

my dad has always been really controlling but its gotten too far now. he comes home and yells at me and my sister and stepmom every single day. tonight is the worst night of my life by far. he completely ruined my sister and my life and we couldnt even say anything back to him because he has used intimidation to parent us. he took our phones and removed our doors and made us completely clean our entire house and if we said a word or even sighed he said he will make our life a living hell. months ago he sent me outside at 11 pm to do yard work and two times in the past week he woke my sister and me up at 3 am to clean the house. tonight he threw something at my infant step brother and verbally abused my stepmom. he will never ever listen to anything anyone says to him. he goes out and drinks to avoid his problems and takes his work out on us. my sister and i are not allowed to contact anyone or leave the house anymore except to go to school. im 15. ive hated living with him ever since i moved in two years ago but tonight crossed a line. we let him intimidate us into submission for too long but i cant live like this anymore. i want to move to my grandmas house (10 minutes away) but he will never let me do that. its gotten to the point where no one loves him and i am constantly scared of him coming home from work. the problem is he never actually hit me or anything so i cant run away. i dont know what to do. i think he might be emotionally abusive.
