  • Please help me someone with my mom

I(16) help my mom all the time and she is also the president of foster care in my county, and i am adopted my her and my dad. When i got the choose to stay with them or go to a different foster parents, i wanted to move without my younger brother and sister but they wanted to stay. My dad is really easy going you can say except when it comes to school or doing dangerous stunts. But my mom on other once she gets angry, and she gets angry over spilled milk, no one really can stop her and i found out she is bipolar but she doesn't take meds or anything. My dad tell her she needs them but when he says that she gets even angrier. When she gets angry like this, she mostly yells at me for nothing or for past things i have done or things she thinks i did but clearly i didn't do anything. I have been with my adopted parents for 5 years, and every time she starts yelling at me for nothing i just want to walk out but i have no where to go and i have thought about living with my friend for a bit but i don't know if she would let me do that or my dad or my friend's parents

RE: Please help me someone with my mom

    Hi there,

Thank you for reaching out to the National Runaway Safeline. It sounds like you’ve been handling a lot on your own and contacting us is a great first step. We’re here to help out as much as we can.

It sounds like you have really been going through a lot lately. You shared a lot regarding your relationship with your mom and your dad. It sounds like your mom has some mental illness that has not been getting treated, which has to be difficult to handle at home. It sounds like you have been affected by this, which is understandable. Have you ever been able to talk to your dad about how you’re feeling?

Sometimes it can be helpful to talk through everything that’s going on with someone you trust. If talking to your dad is not an option, you might consider Teen Line (teenline.org) where you can talk to people your age who are trained to listen and help. Another resource we’d like to provide you is NAMI or the National Alliance for Mental Illness also has support groups available for family members of people with mental illnesses.

It sounds like you are thinking about leaving to live with a friend to get away for a while. We’re not here to tell you what you should or should not do, we just want to help keep you safe. If you decide to leave and you would like a safe place to go if your friend’s house does not work out, you can call us and we can try to come up with a safe alternative place to stay.

You can also call us here at 1800Runaway 24/7 or chat with us from 4:30 to 11:30 CST every day to discuss your potential options.

    Best of luck,
    NRS
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
