I'll be turning 18 in a week and a half . And I need to move out my parents are divorced and I plan on moving with my mom I live with my dad and I've told him when I turn 18 I would be moving out he's always told me if I leave I can't keep anything only the clothes I have on my back . Is there anyway I can keep my things without him interfering ? Such as blankets clothes . I don't know if I'll be able to keep my phone , he pays the bill . I also get social security income but that is under my dads name ect .

    RE: 18 what's next

    Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to the National Runaway Safeline and sharing with us some of what has been going on. We are sorry to hear that things are not going well between you and your dad. It must be difficult for you to be somewhere where you do not want to b. We are glad to hear that you have a place to go after you turn 18 and that you will happy to be with your mom. We are not legal experts so we cannot say if there is a way around what your dad has said, in regards to him not allowing you to take anything expect for the bare minimum. One option is to contact your local police and ask them that exact question- when you leave at 18 from one parents to the next, what is it that you can take with you. If you don’t feel comfortable calling you can always call our hotline and we can make the call for you. We also have a database of legal aid resources and if you were to call we could see if there is something in your area that might be able to better assist you with this question.

In regards to your social security with your dads name on it, we can offer you the Social Security Administration at 1800-772-1213. They may be able to help you figure out any questions you might have in regards to getting your own checks once you turn 18.

We hoped this helped and if you would like to discuss your situation in greater detail you can always call our hotline or chat with us on our website. We look forward to hearing from you and we wish you the best of luck.
