  • Dads girlfriend

My dad has this new girlfriend and I feel like he prefers her better than us. When he talks to my aunt and uncle though. Time to time they get on my nerves. She also sometimes tells me that I am the reason why they break up. They also fight regularly. My aunt and uncle have told us that if we don’t want to live with my dad anymore then we can legally go and live with them as our new guardians. The thing is that sometimes it is nice have my dad around. I care about him. Before all of this we used to get along so well. I don’t want to runaway but I also can’t stand it here with his girlfriend. What should I do???

    Hey there.

Thank you for reaching out to the National Runaway Safeline. It sounds like you’ve been going through a tough time, but we are here to support you and help you in any way we can. That sounds really hurtful to feel that your dad prefers his girlfriend and to have that conflict with him. It sounds like you’re feeling conflicted about whether or not to stay with your dad.

You mentioned that you were thinking of living with your aunt and uncle. Just so you know, we’re not legal experts here at NRS, but it would most likely be a legal process for your aunt and uncle to gain custody of you. You may need your dad’s permission to live with them. If you ever had questions about laws in your state, we have legal aid resources we could provide.

We don’t want to tell you what to do, but you call into us or chat with us online, we could help you explore options or talk through the pros and cons of your decision.

If you haven’t already, you could consider reaching out to a trusted adult, relative, worker/teacher/counselor at your school for help and support. If you haven’t you could also consider talking to your dad about how you’ve been feeling. Or you could have someone else help you talk to him. Just so you know, we also have a conference calling program here at NRS where we could help you by calling out to your dad with you and mediate a conversation between you and him. We could help you tell him how you’ve been feeling and how you feel about his girlfriend.

There are also many resources that could help you talk about what you’ve been going through or help you with anything else you may need. If you want to talk more about what’s been going on, or if you would like more information about resources, you can call us at 1-800-RUNAWAY (1-800-786-2929) or chat with us online.

Again, thank you or contacting us. It sounds like you’ve been going through a hard time, but you’ve shown a lot of strength by working through these challenges and reaching out for help. If you ever need anything in the future, please feel free to call us or chat with us online. We’re always here to listen and here to help.

Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
