  • Leaving my home for a few days

I’m 16 and my situation at home has not exactly been ideal. To not hide anything I’m a junior in high school who smokes weed. I am not oblivious to everything going on with weed I understand that it is illegal and my parents are very upset with me. My mom has not talked to me in 18 days and she even stopped talking to my dad because he is still talking to me.
I have always had anxiety since a young kid and something like this hurts me a lot. I don’t get to see my friends anymore because I cannot leave the house. My friends have served as almost a family and without them I am having a hard time dealing with my all my emotions.
Everytime I am home I have a pounding headache and can barely talk. I went from a happy kid who was always smiling to somebody who can barely even smile. I guess life at home has been ********ty. I am A very athletic kid and with everything going on I can barely eat anymore because I have no appetite.
I simply wanted to know if leaving my house for a few days to focus on myself is a good or bad idea.
I would leave my parents a note explaining everything and why I left. I feel as if I can’t be happy in this home so I need to leave for a few days.
What is everyone input on the situation

    Hey,
It sounds like you’re in a really painful situation and it’s not okay that your mom has been ignoring you. Regardless of what you’ve done, your mother is supposed to support you and make you feel loved. You don’t deserve to be ignored, and it’s especially frustrating that your mother has cut off all emotional support for you as well. It sounds like you’re in a tough spot and we’re glad you reached out.
It sounds like you’re wanting to leave home for just a few days, which is understandable considering your situation. We’re not legal experts, but generally speaking if you are under 18 and leave home without permission, your family would have the right to file a runaway report. If the police are able to locate you, then they would simply return you home. However, if you write a note and think that your parents won’t file a report, then that shouldn’t be an issue. Another option might be to ask your dad for permission to stay with a friend or a family member for a few days. Since he is talking to you right now and your mom isn’t talking to him, he may be understanding of your situation and give you permission. In the end, you know what’s best for your well-being and it’s valid if you believe you need to leave. If you do choose to leave, your safety is important. You might want to think about where you’ll go and who you’ll stay with for the couple days you’re gone.
It sounds like you’re having a terrible time and home and you shouldn’t have to go through this alone. We want to make sure that you’re taking care of yourself as best as you can. This can include things like writing in a journal, reading, drawing, or doing sports when you’re in school. It can also be helpful to talk to someone about what you’re going through, like a guidance counselor or a therapist. Everyone deserves to have a support system, and that includes you.
Another thing you might consider is trying to open up the lines of communication with your mom to let her know how you’ve been feeling. It can be helpful to enlist another adult in having this conversation, like a guidance counselor, therapist, a family friend—maybe even one of your mom’s friend or one of your friend’s parents. Here at NRS, we also offer a conference call service and can help you have that conversation with your mom. If you’re interested in that, you can give us a call at 1-800-786-2929.
If you ever need someone to talk to, you can reach out to us 24/7. Stay strong.
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
