Re: Money from my family
Thank you for getting back to us. From what you wrote it sounds like you know how to get in contact with social services, but you aren't sure how to get what you need and/or want from there. Navigating that system can certianly be tough! What do you think might work? It may be a good first step to call them and talk with someone there who could direct you to the appropriate services. If you would like, we could certainly help you contact them and call with you. Sometimes it can be helpful to have an extra person on the phone to take in information and advocate for you. Or, if you would rather call yourself, can you think of some important questions you might want to ask them? No matter what you decide to do, we are here 24/7 to help out.
Best of luck,
NRS

Re: Money from my family
Hello,
Thanks for contacting us and sharing your story. Sounds like a pretty frustrating situation to be in and having your parents not be supportive.
When you turn 18, the state you are in can help you file for whatever aid you deem necessary and shelter/food are definitely necessary. Do you know how to go about contacting social services? If not, please let us know what city and state you are in so we can provide that info for you.
Sounds like you have a good grasp on what to do once you turn 18. As far as your parents go, it seems illegal for them to claim you as a dependant when you are not really living with them. If they're getting money/have received money, there might not be a way for you to get that back.
Please, if you have more questions and are willing and able to contact us, call us at 1800RUNAWAY 24hrs a day.
Best of luck,
NRS

Money from my family
So i have not lived with my parents since i was almost 17 a little more then a year ago.i was adopted when i was 10. Now im living with my fiance and working and were currently homeless because our rental agreement didnt work out to well.i was a runaway for a few months but my parents decided i could just stay where i was they dint feel like dealing with me anymore. Now im pretty sure my parents were still getting a nice sized check for me (they were before i left) and im pretty sure they claimed me on their taxes. Because i have not lived with them for so long and they refuse to help me out fiancally in any way, i want to know if there is anything i can do to somehow get help from the state for myself since they have been collecting a check for be even though i dont live there. ill be 18 in just a few days so i know i can go to social services and tell them im homeless and im sure theyll help me somehow or another. any info would be extremly helpful!! Also is there any former foster child financial help i can get for school and what not?Tags: None
