I am 16 years old and have three little sisters. Lately I haven't been able to go more then a few days before having a major blowup with my mom or dad. I got a job over winter break and it is at a restaurant so i have to work some week days but anytime I am scheduled on a school night my mom has a heart attack and pitches a major hissy fit. Just tonight I got home from work and my dad and mom had taken all of my tops and jeans out of my room saying "I haven't earned them by helping around the house" I go to school and all my sisters are home schooled so naturally they will be home more to help but when i am home i do help. My mom refuses to give my clothes back, which is an issue. It basically is getting to be really bad at home and I want to be out of the house as much as possible which they are making difficult. I can't keep dealing with this. Anytime i go to a counselor and the counselor calls them they manipulate the situation so they are doing everything right...i just need help

Hello i am a 16 year old girl and i am planning on leaving home. It’s been quite difficult and I have been wanting to leave for awhile now. I am not happy and I have always had the mantality of an adult. I wrote my parents a note in hope they would not call the police but if they do will the cops find me? If i log live with my boyfriend who is 19 can he be charged with kidnapping or harboring a runaway? Or does that all depend on how my parents feel. Also if I got my parent to do it can i get emancipated? How difficult is the process and what do i need in order to be. Thank you.

Hi there,
Thank you for reaching out to us at the National Runaway Safeline. We're sorry to hear that things have been hard at home, but we're glad that you reached out to us today for some answers. We are not legal experts, but if you leave home and your parents file a runaway report you could be returned home. This could happen whether or not you leave a note. Your boyfriend or whomever you stayed with could also possibly be charged with harboring a runaway. It would be dependent on the actions that your parents take and how your local police handles runaway reports. To get more information on how they handle runaway reports, you could call out to your local non-emergency number and inquire about that.
Again we are not legal experts, but if you give us a call at 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) we could look up general information about emancipation based on your home state and also local legal aid that you can reach out to. Emancipation can often be a lengthy and costly process, but you can get help deciding if that is a viable option for you with a legal expert.
Don't hesitate to give us a call and good luck,
NRSPlease remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
