  • I want to run away at 13

My dad is always yelling at my mom and saying really mean things to her. He also swears at me and he is just always angry. It’s kind of hard to explain what’s going on.

sometimes I feel that if a run away for like 2 nights my parents will be scared and maybe this will help or something?. My mom is very nice to me and she is not the problem. I was just wondering where I could stay because I am only 13 and a half. And I don’t want to stay at a homeless shelter or orphanage-like-thing

    Hi there,

Thanks for reaching out to National Runaway Safeline and explaining a little bit of what is going on. It sound difficult how your dad is treating you and your mom. You don’t deserve that. You are not alone in this and we will support you in any way we can.
You talked about how running away and how could be a way to make your parents think or make a point. It is good that you are thinking about ways to help support your family in various form, but it is also thinking about how it might impact the current situation and if there would be any legal consequence.
Running away isn’t illegal, but it is a status offense. This would happen if your parents decided to file a police report. This stays on your record until you are 18. You mentioned that you have thought about where you might go if you decided to runaway. It may be good to think about other friends or family that you may stay with in the area, but it is also important to be aware that your parents could press charges for harboring you in the know the person you are staying with.
One thing we offer here at NRS is a service call conference call. A conference call is where we would mediate a conversation between you and a guardian to help you communicate your thoughts and help you feel understood.
Please feel free to reach out to us directly at 1-800-RUNAWAY or access our chat at our website. Wish you all the best and stay safe!
