Hi,
Thank you for reaching out! It sounds like things are rough at home right now. It took a lot of courage to get in touch to discuss your next steps. Oftentimes in situations like this it helps to talk about what’s going on with a teacher, school counselor, relative, and/or friends.
We aren’t legal experts here however we can share info as we understand it. Running away isn’t a crime it’s what’s considered a status offense which means a youth isn’t allowed to do it because they aren’t an adult. One option to consider is, if your parents would allow it, you could stay with a relative or friend for a while to give things a chance to cool down. Another option is if there is someone that your parents listen to that you could ask to talk to your parents for you or help you talk with them. Also, we offer a conference calling service where we could mediate a conversation between you and your parents to keep things calm and fair.
If you decide to runaway some things to consider are where you will stay, how you will get money, your safety, if you will continue school and how to do so. Also, if you go to stay with someone and they are over 18 they could be charged with harboring a runaway. We could look up shelter resources for you as well however note that they usually require parental notification and/or consent sometimes immediately others after a couple of days.
Thank you again for reaching out. We’d be happy to further discuss your options on the phone or chat. We are here 24/7 so please don’t hesitate to get back in touch if you need us. Good luck with everything. Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
