Hi there –
Thanks for getting into touch with us here at the National Runaway Safeline on our public forum. It takes courage to reach out when things get tough. We are always here to listen and help.
You’ve shared that your mom is struggling with some mental health issues right now. She wants to go through her recovery process alone and has asked that you move out after finishing your second semester of community college.
The situation with your mother sounds difficult to manage on your own and you already have a lot on your plate. It can be frustrating not knowing what to do in the months ahead. You have every right to feel the way you feel and it’s great that you’re thinking about what your next step might be already.
You’re not alone during this. We’re here to provide a safe space to tackle what you’re dealing with and offer support and options along the way. A few things to share:
At 18 (going on 19), you would be considered legally an adult, which means your mother would not be required to house you by law. It sounds like your mom is offering some flexibility in terms of a move-out date. Have you thought about what your plans and needs might be (i.e long term housing, transportation, financial stability, counseling and medical services, access to food/clothes, etc.)?
We aren’t here to tell you want to do, but we can certainly be a sounding board as you think about the move and help link you to resources that you might need.
To make sure we have all the details and can provide you with the best assistance, you might consider calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or contacting us by Live Chat from 4:30p to 11:30p CST
