    Hi there,
Thanks for reaching out to the National Runaway Safeline. We understand that it takes a great deal of courage to speak out. It sounds like your situation at home with Dad is really frustrating. We’re so sorry you’re going through this right now. You don’t deserve to be verbally abused.
We’re not legal experts here. We can only speak generally about running away and the laws surrounding it. Typically only the legal guardian is allowed to file a runaway report. However, we’re not entirely sure how the police check this information. It can very from department to department. You could try and call your local police station to get this information, or, if that makes you uncomfortable, we could do that for you or a trusted friend could for you as well.
We’re interested in hearing more about the situation and seeing if there’s any way we can help. If you’d like to give us a call here at 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) we’d be happy to talk to you more. Your safety is the most important thing to us. We’re confidential and 24/7.
    All the best,
    NRS

Dad has no custody over me, can he still file a runaway report?

I'm 16 years old, turning 17 in 22 days. I recently moved in with my father because I thought it was time after 13 years to give him a chance, but now I know that was the wrong decision. he is very emotionally abusive and is a major douche bag and I absolutely hate him he treats me like I'm a piece of property to him, and restricts me from doing anything, and blames me for things I didn't do. he has no custody over me however, my mother does because we haven't gone to court yet. I've told her about everything and have talked to her she said that I should go stay with my brother until I'm 17 and after that she will grant legal guardian rights to my girlfriend's parents. If I go to my brothers without my father's permission can he do anything to stop me?
