  • I'm running out of options and need help

i'm 17 and i live in texas. i turn 18 next month, and my parents have already said that they were kicking me out on my birthday. they won't let me get a job so i don't really have any money so i can't just run away right now, they'd call the police anyways. this week, i found out i was pregnant and all my mom said was "you better get in contact with your boyfriend and y'all can figure it out" no one has talked to me since then, and this morning they left a note saying "rent is due". i've never paid them rent before, and the only money i have is from my graduation and it's not much. i don't want to pay them or live here, but none of my friends can take me in and i can't move in with my boyfriend. what can i do? i don't want to stay here but do i have any other choice?

    Hi,

Thanks so much for taking the time to reach out to us today. It sounds like you're in a really difficult situation right now. We are so sorry about the way you're being treated a home. It sounds pretty unfair that your parents have decided to start making you pay rent after finding out you were pregnant when they won't even let you have a job. We can talk about options you have together.

One thing you can consider doing is getting a job. You did mention that previously your parents did not allow you to get a job, but now that they are trying to force you to pay rent it may be a good idea to look into getting one anyways. You can also try reaching out to friends or family members and explaining to them the situation you're in. Maybe with a bit of planning and forewarning you might be able to stay at someone's house who is close to you. You can also call planned parenthood to talk about the situation you're in, and hopefully they can help you and point you to resources around your area or resources for pregnant teens. You can call them at 1-800-230-7526 or go to plannedparenthood.org.

If you call int our hotline we can also help you look into shelter resources around your area. There may be some long term or short term shelters in your area you can stay in if things with your parents do not get better. We can even call into your local police department and ask them if you would be able to move out considering your situation.

If you need anything else or want to talk more about your situation please don't hesitate to reach out to us again. You can call us at 1-800-RUNAWAY, we are 24/7 and someone will always be here to answer and help in the best way we can.
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
