Hello thanks for reaching out today for your niece. Sounds like she is in a pretty unstable situation with her mom and you are wondering how you can help. She is lucky to have someone like you looking out for her.

If she is not getting her basic needs met by her mom, that could be considered neglect by child protective services and she does have the right to report that. If she reports and the neglect is found to be dangerous, she would be removed from her mom’s custody. To learn more about what reporting might look like for your niece and to get access to your state or county’s abuse hotline you could contact the expert child advocates at Child Help 1-800-422-4453. You can report for her or she could report as well.

If she is under 18 and leaves home without permission her mom could file a runaway report for her with local police. So you might try to talk to her mom and see if she can get permission to live elsewhere. That is the easiest way she can leave, and her mom does not have to give up custody.

If you have additional questions or would like help brainstorming other options, please do not hesitate to call or chat us. Thanks again for being there for your niece.

    Best,

    NRS
