  • 15 and in need of assistance

I have money and a bag packed but I have no way to get away from my situation. I live in a small town in Nebraska and I fear if I cant leave soon then my life may be in danger. I need assistance in the form of transportation. Could you recommend a service or something of the like?

Thanks for posting to the National Runaway Safeline Forum. We’re sorry to hear that you feel like your life will be in danger if you don’t get away soon. Your safety is really important and it is really great that you are trying to find out more about your transportation options before deciding what to do next.

In your post, you mention that your life may be in danger. You don’t mention if you feel in danger because of the relationship you have with your parents, other family members, or even with people your own age. If your parents or other family members are hurting you or threatening to hurt you, that is not ok and you deserve to live in a place where you feel safe. If it is other people that are threatening you and you have a good relationship with your parents or any other family members, you may want to talk to them about what is going on. They may be able to help or they may know of some other people in town that can help you out. In either case, you can call us at 1-800-786-2929 or chat with us by clicking the chat button on the top of our website (www.1800runaway.org) if you want to tell us more about your situation and even find out about services that are close to you. We are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Depending on your situation, you may want to talk with your local police department. One thing to think about is that both the National Runaway Safeline and the police are mandated reporters. This means that if you tell us that someone at home is hurting you, we will be required to file an official report. If you don’t want a report filed but you still want to talk to us, just make sure you don’t mention your family members’ names over the phone or during the chat. We are still happy to talk more with you about what’s going on and may be able to connect you with some agencies or services nearby. You can also call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233.

There are some things you might want to consider before leaving where you are to go to another city. It is possible that you have already thought about these things, but we will include them just to be sure. You might want to think about where you will be staying, particularly if the weather makes it unsafe for you to be outside. You also might want to think about how you will get yourself food on a regular basis, particularly if your money runs out after a while. Also, you may be approached by police officers and you will want to think about what you will tell them and how you might feel if they try and take you back to where you are currently living.

Again, it is great that you have reached out find out more about your transportation options. Without knowing more about your situation or where in Nebraska you are actually located right now, we can’t really offer any services or the phone numbers for any agencies. Please feel free to call or chat with us so that we can offer some resources that will be helpful to you. Even if you just need a safe place to stay for one night, we can call out to nearby shelters for you. We at the National Runaway Safeline are always here to talk over the phone or chat. We are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
