  • How to Safely Leave Home at 15

I've been having some issues with my family lately, and I've decided that I need to leave home. That's what everyone is telling me to do. It's not a physical abuse situation, but more of an emotional one. I honestly can't take it anymore, and I need a lot of help.

First off, I haven't told anyone, and I'm not planning to, because in the past it never worked. No one ever believed me.

So..a little about me..I currently live in Maryland and I am 15 years old. This situation has been going on for about a few years now, but I'm just now deciding to do something about it. I found a center in DC, that is supposed to help runaway youth called FYSB (Family and Youth Services Bureau. On foot it is 6-7 hours , which I'm not about to do.

I got some advice on another website, and I want to verify it here. I was told to ask a church for a ride or get a free greyhound ticket. I'm not sure I want the ticket because I'd still be alone, and I may risk getting abducted.

I am serious about this situation, so I'm going to ask a few questions before taking actions.

First off, will I qualify for something like this, or will they think I'm just a rebellious brat and send me home?

Second, while I'm there, it is said that they'll be finding a safe group or permanent home for me. Can I request a specific type? For example, say I want to live with someone who is the same religion and culture as me so I don't have to go against my traditions?

Third, if my family asks for me, do I have to go back? If the services know I'm in danger, they wouldn't take me back to my parents, would they?

Fourth, what about legal procedures and my school life? Don't they have to get documents from my parents? What if they don't hand them over?

Fifth, do they look for families in the area (for example the DMV), or is it like an adoption situation where I can end up anywhere?

Last, I think, what do I need to bring? I know I need clothes, my school stuff, and other necessities, but is there anything else I need?

I'm really scared about running away, and I'm afraid that something will go wrong, but I'm also scared to stay home. I just want to be in a loving, caring, and safe home. I just want somewhere safe to go.

Thank you in advance for all of your help
