  • want to leave home don't feel safe!!!

I wanted to know if a 17 year old who turns 18 in 3 months is able to leave their home if they don't feel safe and have a stable job, safe place to stay and are also doing good with school?
The person who needs help called Simi valley's non emergency hotline and they said no is there anyway the person who needs help can contact the sheriff and show proof they are able to live on their own?

RE: want to leave home don't feel safe!!!

Thank you for reaching out to us. We aren’t legal experts here but we can speak generally. Typically since she is a minor her guardian can file a runaway report, in which case she could be returned to them. Police do sometimes respond differently the closer the youth is to being 18. That is something you may want to ask the police department (how they would respond to a runaway report of a 17 year old who is almost 18.) If she feels unsafe for any reason; that is something she can make a report about. If you need to speak further you can feel free to contact us directly at 1-800-RUNAWAY. We hope to hear from you soon. Good luck.
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.

        Hey there,

Thanks so much for reaching out and sharing a little bit about what’s been going on, we know that it takes a lot of courage. It must be really hard to live in a home with so much tension. Running away is a big decision and it can be very stressful to figure out what you want to do.

You mentioned having some issues with depression. If you’d like some additional support, an organization that may be helpful is the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). You can contact them by calling 1-800-950-NAMI or you can text them by sending NAMI to 741741. Another agency that could be of great help is the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), they can help you locate low or no cost mental health care providers in your area. Their number is 1-800-662-4357 or you can go to their site at

If you’d like to go over what’s going on in depth, or if you’d like to explore other options that you may have available to you, please don’t hesitate to call us at 1-800-RUNAWAY. You can also chat us by clicking on the “CHAT” button on top of our homepage. We’re open 24/7 and here to listen and support you in any way we can.

        Stay safe,
