I'm 16 I don't feel welcomed in my home anymore. I feel like living here is mentally hurting me. They're great parents at times but the environment can be toxic they don't understand me. I'm tired of living here. I feel that I would be doing better in school and be happier if I where to move out. But I don't know if it's legal.

Thank you for reaching out to the National Runaway Safeline. It sounds like you’ve been going through a really hard time, but we are here to help you and support you in any way we can. That sounds so hard and tiring to not feel understood and live in a toxic environment.
We’re not legal experts here at NRS. But generally, it is not illegal for youth to runaway from home. However, your parents could file a runaway report, the police could get involved, and they could bring you back home if they find you. The people you’re staying with could also potentially get in legal trouble for harboring a runaway. The easiest way to leave home and live somewhere else is with parents’ permission.
There are many resources out there that could help you talk through the things you’ve been going through, or help you with anything else you might need. If you would like more information about resources or if you’d like to talk more about what’s been going one, you can call us at 1-800-RUNAWAY (1-800-786-2929) or chat with us online. If you haven’t already, you could also consider reaching out to a trusted adult, teacher, school worker, or family member for help.
Again, thank you for contacting us. It sounds like you’ve been going through a rough time, but you’ve shown strength by working through these challenges and reaching out for help. If you ever need anything in the future, please feel free to call or chat with us online. We’re always here to listen and here to help. Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
