Re: I need to get out of here

    Hello,

We are pleased that you have chosen to contact us at the National Runaway Switchboard to discuss your situation and in spite of all the tension at home, your willingness to want to change things and do better strikes us as geniune. We imagine that the hardships surrounding your family can be resolved if only everyone involved understood the benefits of it but it is easier said than done. Have you considered setting up a time to meet with everyone in the family to talk about the struggles you are having at home? It sounds like there is a lot of back and forth between the family with regards to having the upper hand in the situation. Can anything be gained out of the conflicts you are having once you are able to put it behind you and try to resolved these conflicts in joint sessions with a counselor? We cannot imagine how you are really feeling but we at least hope that you can count on us to support you in any way we can. We are not here to tell you what to do but we feel that you can benefit by calling us at our 1800RUNAWAY number to speak to someone anonymously about the situation. We are never going to judge you and we are confidential.

In terms of what you can do and where you can go, the choice is yours for what you want to do but we can help with finding you a shelter in your home town or anywhere you like if you choose to leave home. If you are already an adult, you do not need permission to stay at a shelter but if you are still a minor, you are going to need consent from your parents. Shelters are not permanent but can provide you with a place to lay your head as you look for work or can provide you with counseling to head in the right direction. Have you ever considered Job Corps as an option. You can reach this organization at 1800-733-5627. This can get you started on job and life skills and also getting your GED. They provide you with shelter, food and guide you into the real world after conpleting the program.

If you were concerned for what your parents can do if you are still a minor, it is important to know that they can file a report as a runaway if they choose, even when you are told to leave. Do you see this happening? The thing to know is that it is not a crime to runaway but where you stay and who you decide to stay with can be an issue. Your parents can file charges on people who harbors you but only if they took it up as something that needs the police to intervene. You are the only person who is capable of knowing what to do in this situation and to know what to expect but we say these things to you just for you to know what else is the norm in situations such as yours. Do you feel like you are not happy or do you find yourself depressed a lot? Have you considered doing activities to send time away from home? What can you do to distract yourself from your family more? Do you have ideas for what you can do to stay positive and not let your feelings get in the way to avoid escalation of conflicts? We want to be there for you if you need some guidance on how to deal with these frustrations you are having. If you feel you can benefit from resources we want to help with that also. We are here for you whenever you wan to reach out again and we hope that you ways to overcome it all. Good luck.
