  • 19 getting married and moving out

My story is complicated and I don't want to get into too much detail, but suffice to say we don't get along and he is extremely rough with me. I'm currently 18 but will be turning 19 this year. By the end of the year I'm proposing to my girlfriend so we can get married next summer (I will be 20 by that time). I am completely under my father's rule. He controls my bank account, has me under his life insurance, etc. I have thought about my decision and I will be moving out. I just need help figuring out how to get out of things like his bank account and his insurance. I plan on getting my own but I know that he will refuse to let me leave and do all he can to keep me home. Can he use his insurance to keep me at home? Are their ways that I can cut my connections with him on my own? I just want to make sure that after I leave he still doesn't have control over certain legal things. Thank you.

    Hi,
Thank you so much for reaching out to us here at NRS; it was a very brave thing to do. The situation with your father sounds very frustrating. It sounds like you have been through a lot with him and have thought a lot about what you are planning to do. That is great. You also mentioned your dad is extremely rough with you. No one deserves to be treated this way. If you ever feel like you are in danger, you can always call 911.
You asked some questions about getting things out of your dad’s bank account and his insurance. We are not legal experts, but if you give us a call we can definitely refer you to a legal resource in your area that could answer your questions.
You mentioned that you are 18 and will soon be turning 19. In most states, 18 is the age of majority, meaning you can leave home without your parents’ permission. However, depending on where you live, the age could be older.
Thank you again for contacting us. If you have any more questions or would like some legal resources, please give us a call at 1-800-786-2929.
    Sincerely,
    NRS
