Re: A friend and I want to leave home

    Hello,

Thanks for reaching out to us. We are sorry to hear both you and your friend are suicidal and it's understandable you would want to be in a more positive environment. Since you mentioned being suicidal, we do want to share that there is support specifically for young people through the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline's, You Matter campaign. More information can be found here: http://www.youmatter.suicidepreventionlifeline.org/.

You mentioned you are in Northern Indiana and although we aren't sure of exactly which part or how old you and your friend are, there are two runaway/homeless shelters through National Safe Place. There is one in Gary and another in South Bend if either of those cities are nearby. If so, you can text "safe" to 69866 to figure out the safe place closest to you.

Youth Services Bureau of St. Joseph County/South Bend:
Offers a Safe Station temporary emergency shelter for youth 12-18
YSB of St. Joseph County is a nonprofit located in South Bend, IN, providing all youth access to safety, shelter and hope. Our community is stronger when all youth are safe and have the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Crisis Center Youth Service Bureau, Gary:
Offers immediate help and shelter for young people 10-17

These shelters may not be the long-term solution, but at least allow you a break from your home while you and your friend work through the issues between you and your families. Best of luck!
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
