  • how much time do I have?

How long do I have to be gone from home for my guardian to file a missing child/ runaway report? I'm planning on flying to Hawaii where my bf (20 of age) on the 17th and I turn 18 on the 18th. Will I be stopped at the airport or something like that?
My bf is also military personel, will I get him into any kind of trouble?
Also, will I have a record of the runaway? As in, will it be hard for me to get a job in the future?

      Thank you for posting.
We are glad that you have decided to write to us to try and figure out what could happen if you decide to leave home without your guardian’s permission. Well we want you to know that we are not in any way affiliated with the police but to our knowledge there is not a minimum amount of time that has to go by before a runaway report can be made. One can be filed as soon as they are noticed missing.
You questioned if you would be stopped at the airport if you try and go to Hawaii. There is a strong possibility that you will be stopped because you are traveling underage and without a custodial guardian. Since running away is not a crime the only thing that would happen to you is that you would be detained you until the authorities arrive to take you back home. You would not get a record or be charged with anything.
As mentioned before we are not associated with the police and we are not legal experts in any way. If you were to leave and go to be with your boyfriend there is a chance that he could be charged with harboring a runaway. Since he is military that charge might have a different name and punishment that are more severe.
If you would like more definitive answers for these questions please give us a call and we can make an anonymous call to your local non-emergency police to find out.
We hope to hear from you soon.

          Hi there,

Thanks for reaching out to us here at National Runaway Safeline (NRS). It sounds like you made the decision to leave home because of abuse. We're sorry you were mistreated like that. You're now wondering if being a runaway would affect you when you're 18. We are not legal experts, but we have learned that generally a runaway report is no longer valid when someone turns 18. This depends on your city and state. And it may benefit to call out to your local police to verify that the report becomes void- no longer in effect. If you need any help with resources or shelters, please consider calling our 24/7 crisis line.

We're here to listen and to help.

          Be safe and good luck,

          NRS

              Hi There,

We are glad you reached out today. It sounds like you are in a really tough situation with your birth mom, dad, and step mom and things are making you unhappy. It is reasonable you would want to be in an environment where things weren’t so difficult and you could be happy. While we are not legal experts we can speak generally on your questions. Generally in the United States you do have to be 18 to leave home without your legal guardian’s permission. If your legal guardian chooses to file a runaway report and the police were to pick you up they would return you to your legal guardian. Running away is a status offence meaning it is illegal to do because of your age but youth are generally not arrested or charged for running away. One thing to keep in mind is whoever you’re staying with could be charged with harboring a runaway which is a misdemeanor offence. It is good you are gathering information before deciding to leave or not, and we are here to support you in whatever decision you make. If you would like to talk more in depth about your situation we are available to talk 24/7 at 1-800-RUNAWAY where you can remain confidential.

              Best,
              ~NRS

              • Run away

I'm 17 I'll be 18 in two months. I ran away July 7 after my brother tried to kill me. I've been away from home for a month. Yesterday my mother called me in as a run away even though she knew where I was. She called my boyfriend's phone to find me and I just honestly didn't want to talk to her seeing as she is blaming me for putting my brother in jail he might get 1-15 for life. Anyways, she's trying to forus me to redo my taxes so she can get 2,000 more. Even though I have a job and supported myself. I'm going to refuse to do it. can I put her in jail for smoking weed with me. Buying me beer and weed accessories and leaving me at my grandmas who's 81 for two years.

Hello and thank you for writing to us here on the National Runaway Safeline forums. It seems you’ve dealt with a lot at home with your mom and brother. You mentioned that your brother tried killing you which sounds extremely scary. You deserve to feel safe in your home environment. You’re wondering if your mom could be put in jail for buying you those things and leaving you with your grandmother. We are not sure as we are not legal experts. If you are looking into filing a neglect or abuse report, you may learn more from Child Help USA 1-800-422-4453, www.childhelp.org. It seems you may benefit from talking through some things, and we’re here to listen.

Please consider calling or chatting with us. We can explore your situation more as well as offer resources.

                  Take care,

                      Hello There,
Thanks for posting on our forum today.
We’re sorry to hear about what’s been happening with your dad and your school. It sounds like something is going on that you’re trying to get away from. We’re so sorry this is all happening to you. You’re very courageous for standing up for yourself like this.
We’re not sure exactly what is going on here. It sounds like your school was alerted that someone has reported you to the police as a runaway. It might be your father if you left his home without permission. We’re not legal experts here, but running away isn’t a crime. The police may be looking for you, but if they find you they would just returned you home or possible detain you until a guardian can get you. Nothing would appear on your record if you’re not a frequent runaway.
It sounds like there’s a lot going on. If you wanted, you could try to reach out to us here and talk with someone directly about what is happening and what options you might have available to you. We can be reached here 24/7 at 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or you could try our Live Chat right here on this website. We’re confidential here and our mission is to keep you safe and off the streets.
                      Stay strong,

                          Hello,

Thanks for reaching out to us for help. We are so sorry to hear that you were sexually abused. You did not deserve for that to happen, and nobody has the right to abuse you. We are here to listen and support you in any way that we can. It takes a lot of strength to ask for help, and we are glad that you did. One resource that might be helpful is the National Sexual Assault Hotline, RAINN (Rape Abuse Incest National Network). You can call them any time at 1-800-656-4673 or go to www.rainn.org. You have a right to report the sexual abuse you have experienced. We understand this can be very scary and is not the option for everyone. It sounds like you ran away from home, and now you are on probation. Not knowing everything about your situation, we cannot say what will happen to you now, as that depends on what is going on. If you violate probation by running away, you could get into trouble. It sounds like you are in a really difficult situation, and we are here to help you in any way that we can. You can call us any time 24/7 if you need to talk, or reach out to us for our live chat service. We can talk through your situation in detail, and come up with options and a plan to stay safe. We are looking forward to hearing from you soon, and wish you the best of luck.

                              Hey there,

Thanks for contacting us. We can't really say what may happen if you choose to runaway for a second time. There might be a chance you could be sent back home since you are still under the age of 18. We aren't legal experts here, so it's hard for us to know what your options are for living somewhere else. You normally would need permission to live with someone else as long as your parents are still your legal guardians. You could call the non emergency police in your area to see how they would handle the situation.
